To follow up

On yesterday's post about Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose.  I have seen some issues now and I see that both sides have some valid points.

But I am afraid of becoming this guy...

Aw, don't be a chicken! "cheep cheep cheep cheep" (sorry, watched "The Room" recently :-)

Hey, there's always eBay. PayPal and don't ask don't tell is a great way to avoid feeling too sleazy.

I read a good chunk of Tarot. I... basically, I agree with the people who think that it's meaningless sex-riddle cheesecake, I just don't see what's wrong with that. A little titillation never hurt nobody. I put it in a similar category to Jacqueline Carey's work.

The only thing I will say is that I found Tarot a little half-assed. The art wasn't quite explicit enough to be porn and the story wasn't quite serious enough to not be porn. I kind of wish they'd gone one way or the other... or alternately, gone both ways. Much as Jacqueline Carey's work combines explicit sex scenes with serious plot, a sex-positive comic that combined totally serious plots with sex would have been fun.

I also appreciated that we had a story about tropes of modern magic, witches, and Wiccans that didn't fall back on the old cliches of witches = bad or everyone else = bad. Magic was still a dynamic and dangerous force in Tarot and most of the people who misused it were the same people who were steeped in it. Most of the chararcters' problems came from magic. The author didn't bend over backwards to make her witches ceaselessly heroic in the face of constant oppression. Just people, with power, dealing with a dangerous world.

Hey, I can see that you're really into witchy stuff. I've never been much for it, as distinct from magic in fantasy in general Would you care to throw up a post with some insight into themes of witchiness and what you find so remarkable about it. I did some similar stuff with paladins on my blog a while back, and it was fun to write (don't know if it was fun to read, though :-/).
